2014 in Review

Well it’s 2015 and that means it’s time to take a look back at the past year. A lot happened in 2014 for Kalamazoo Kubb.

First, and maybe most importantly, we received a Steven R. Anderson Kubb Set Grant, which allowed us to expand kubb within our group. We now had the same sets that tournaments were using so we were practicing with the right stuff. It allowed us to keep kubb sets in our trunk, ensuring there was always a set available for impromptu games. The grant really allowed us to play more kubb, with more people. Thanks, USA Kubb!

The next big event was the U.S. National Kubb Championship. It was the first time Kalamazoo Kubb had sent a team, and The Settlers of Baton made a surprisingly good run. Christopher Jones even wrote up a post on his blog recapping the tournament.

After returning from nationals, Kalamazoo Kubb started planning for the future. It was time to grow the club. A lot of wheels were put into motion, including the creation of a new identity, a more robust social presence on Twitter and Facebook and the first official Kalamazoo Kubb event.

That first event was our KUBBQ. This was a casual barbecue and kubb friendlies event in a local park. Check out our recap to learn more and see some photos.

This past year was great, and we’re looking forward to a lot of exciting things in 2015. Happy New Year!

Kubb Holiday Gift Guide

kubb-gift-bagIt’s that time of year when you need to start checking people off your holiday gift list. So what do you get all of your friends and family? Might we recommend a kubb set? Here are a few places to pick up a set.

They don’t sell kubb sets, but you can find some cool kubb-related items like t-shirts and hats at USA Kubb’s webshop.

If you’re struggling to get the dimensions of your pitch just right, we highly recommend the Quick Pitch system from Des Moines Kubb.

Did we miss your favorite kubb gift? Let us know about it in the comments. Happy kubbing!

Yes, There Really Is A Kalamazoo!

Greetings from Kalamazoo, Michigan!

greetings

Thanks to Planet Kubb for granting our request for a club webpage! A few summer’s ago, my group of friends started playing a lawn game where you throw wooden batons at wooden blocks and quickly decided this game was for us. In that time, we’ve grown from a group still grasping at the rules, to a group that plays weekly (from spring to fall) at our Family Dinners.

We’ve started Kalamazoo Kubb here at Planet Kubb, as well as on Facebook and Twitter, in an effort to unite players around the Kalamazoo and Southwest Michigan area. We know there are teams out there, like Team Kalamakubb, that competed at the US National Championships and now we have resources to get us all together to grow the game here in Michigan!

So if you are in the Kalamazoo or Southwest Michigan area, and want to play some Kubb, please reach out to us. We’d love to hear from you!
